Godafoss, the jewel of Iceland, is translated as Waterfall of the Gods. At the historic Alping (kind of ancient parliament) gathering in the year 1000, which was held on the hill overlooking Thingvellir Park and which was solely devoted to which religion the islanders should continue to profess without burning, maiming and beheading one another, the then Alping speaker named Thorgeir decided in favor of Christianity after presumably painful thinking for a whole day and night. The next morning he publicly declared Iceland a Christian nation and proudly set off home. On the way home he stopped at a beautiful waterfall in North Central Iceland and set a more than vivid example to others by throwing his personal collection of carved Pagan idols down this waterfall. Hence the romantic name.
